The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, says that Canada will not welcome unvaccinated visitors for quite some time.
There have been rumors that Canada would reopen the border with the United States this summer, but the Canadian Prime Minister has refused to give any dates on the reopening. That’s despite growing pressure on both sides of the border to reopen for non-essential travel.
Although Canada has dropped its quarantine requirement for fully Canadians, Canada has kept the ban on non-essential travel into the country. Justin Trudeau didn’t give any dates on reopening to vaccinated tourists. However, he stated, “I can tell you right now that’s not going to happen for a while,” in regards to allowing unvaccinated travelers into the country.
Trudeau further added, “we need to continue to ensure the safety of Canadians.” The Prime Minister says his focus is bringing vaccinated travelers back into Canada, and his government will have more to say “in the coming weeks.” The Canadian government will review the restrictions in the next few weeks, with a possible reopening on July 21st.
The Current Restrictions
Non-essential travel between the United States and Canada remains banned. There has been a ban in place since the pandemic began. Every month the two governments review the ban, but the ban remains unchanged. There were rumors that Canada would lift the ban this month, but it seems unlikely now.
As of now, Canadians can avoid quarantine if they have evidence of a negative PCR test AND proof of full vaccination upon arrival. However, if not, they will need to undergo a pre-flight test, 3-day hotel quarantine, and 14-day quarantine at home, with a day-8 test.
The Canadian authorities have set a target of vaccinating 75% of their population before opening the border. However, Canada has vaccinated 75% of its population in June, but there’s still no information on the border. Canada has almost vaccinated 80% of its population as of this week.
The country has given 41 million COVID-19 vaccine doses, with 44.8 percent of over 12s fully vaccinated. There have been 1.4 million COVID-19 cases in Canada, with 26,356 deaths since the pandemic began.
The Current COVID-19 Situation In The U.S And Canada
Canada’s rates of COVID-19 have dropped to the lowest levels since September 2020 as the numbers of vaccinations grow. There were only 1,231 infections recorded on Monday, the lowest since Canada reported 1,215 cases on September 26th, 2020. In addition, the seven-day average is down to 1795, the lowest number of cases since early October.
Cases of COVID-19 are rising in the U.S, but cases remain considerably lower than ever before in the pandemic. Cases are up 11% on the previous week, mainly because of the rise in the Delta Variant.
The Delta Variant is causing uncertainty for the travel industry. As a result, Europe is slowly starting to introduce restrictions on countries with high rates of the Delta Variant.
The Future Of Travel
Europe has opened for travel this summer, with most countries reopening for non-essential travel for fully vaccinated travelers. However, despite Europe’s reopening, Canada and the United States remain closed for non-essential travel. The U.S government remains reluctant to open up to the world, and Canada also has reservations about opening up.
Economists and travel companies on both sides of the border are pressuring the governments to open up. Perrin Beatty, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, stated, “the fact it is far easier for Canadians to travel to Paris than Buffalo demonstrates how illogical the present policy is.”
The pressure is likely to increase in the coming weeks, but as it stands – it looks like the border could be closed for the second summer running.
