MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In Tuesday’s Ransom Note: time to get away.
The travel industry is a long way from being back to normal. Business and convention travel as well as travel overseas remains a fraction of where things were in 2019. But Memorial Day weekend showed more Americans are more than ready to lead the way. The Transportation Security Administration says air travelers going through airports over Memorial Day weekend was up 455% over 2020. AAA says 37 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more through Monday, up 60% from last year.
The U.S. Travel Association says almost 9 in 10 of us plan to travel in the next six months. So, where are we going? Google can measure what places Memphians are searching for most, and apparently we’re ready for some sun. Miami and Las Vegas are by far the top two cities. So many other cities were bunched together after that there was no clear number three, four or five.
Doctors worry about new variants, fearing new surges in August or this fall because so many people are unvaccinated, but most Americans seem willing to take their chances. Join the conversation by email (firstname.lastname@example.org), Facebook, or Twitter.
